At Lula & Sadies, our journey is one deeply rooted in family, community, and the love of southern cuisine. Founded by Harry S. Monds (aka “H2”), Owner and Executive Chef and a cherished member of the Durham NC community for decades, our restaurant is more than just a place to dine – it's a destination where connections are made, and flavors are savored.

Who are Lula and Sadie?

Lula and Sadie are the grandmothers of Harry (H2). At a young age, they helped instill a love for cooking in the hearts of H2 and his brother. They enjoyed exploring the kitchen together and began to cook for the whole family. When it came time to name H2’s new project, “Lula & Sadie’s” seemed like the perfect fit to unite the past and the future and pay homage to the people and times that made H2 fall in love with bringing people together over good food. A passion that he would pass on to his kids and beyond.

A Legacy of Family and Flavor

Harry's vision for Lula & Sadie’s emerged from a desire to create a gathering space that would resonate with everyone. Our doors opened in the historic Davis Baking Co. building in Durham’s Lakewood neighborhood in April 2023, and since then, we've carved a niche as a welcoming haven for locals and visitors seeking an unforgettable dining experience. Though we are new to the building, we’re not new to the Durham food scene. From The Thyme Table to The Blue Sage to Bull City Street Food, Harry has been involved in the restaurant industry in Durham since 1991.

This has been a family venture since day one…hence the name, “Monds’ Ventures”, the parent company of Lula & Sadie’s. H2 and his wife Pam have raised 4 children in the area, Harry (H3), Dorian, Patrick, & Taylor. Throughout different points in their lives, the kids have been involved in the business in various ways. Currently, H3 is the Chef de Cuisine at Lula & Sadie’s and Dorian works in the kitchen too!
